Haute Restaurant of the Week: Casa Tua

We are back! So we took a little detour from the Fashion Week craze to lounge poolside in sunny Miami and dine at South Beach's chicest spots, most notably Casa Tua. Tucked away in a Mediterranean style villa hidden by palms and lush tropical foliage is Casa Tua. Located in South Beach's art deco district, it is an impossible spot to snag a reservation, even socialites call in favors to perch in the main dining area.

The idea behind Casa Tua is to make you feel at home as the hotel and restaurant's name translates to "your home". The restaurant occupies the interconnecting ground-floor rooms of the main house with a gorgeously intimate candle lit patio and offers classic Italian and Mediterranean fare by executive chef Sergio Sigala. On his menu you will find delectable dishes such as the burrata with organic-tomato salad and the pappardelle with lamb ragu. Don't forget to check out the selection of well chosen bubbly and white wine, a highlight of the finely crafted wine list.

The Ralph Lauren-esque living room is a serene intermission from the constant bustle of Miami's party life atmosphere. Original art hangs on every blank surface and changes every month. Art Basel and a who's who of international art and society, descended on Casa Tua late last year to dine as well as to view the current artwork and photography.

Casa Tua also features an exclusive upstairs lounge available only to select insiders and privileged members. In order to keep an anonymous mystique, you will not find any advertising or signage indicating that you are in fact at the restaurant – their motto is "privacy is precious". If you ever thought New York had a lack of Marie Antoinette meets-bakesale-meets-easy-chic Beverly Hills coffee shop, you’re finally in luck. Welcome to Sweetiepie, a charming, aberrant restaurant, dessert bar and absinthe fairytale all wrapped into one.

The prince and princess behind the Sweetiepie fairytale are owners and husband and wife team, Julie and Literary agent Luke Janklow of Janklow and Nesbit. The conception of this sweet retreat was due to the lack of magical space in the Janklow’s Greenwich neighborhood. Sweetiepie is inspired by restaurants of the past, many of them in California such as The Fountain Coffee Shop in the Beverly Hills Hotel and France’s iconic and opulent Marie Antoinette.

With the capacity to fit 74 guests into two rooms, the décor is intended to embrace all things lavish and imaginary. The interior decorator, Miles Redd, known for his classic clutter creations and stylist, and Lauren du Pont, who conceptualized the pink marble floors, candy apple red banquettes and a gold brass human birdcage (which seats six) to tantalize guests as soon as they enter the space.

A Palette of desserts served in an antique Maison Jensen tea cart is laden with an assortment of fantastical sweets, including the “Sweetiepig”, a vast sundae prepared for six people or one if you can possibly endure the repercussions. While awaiting your Sweetiepig guests can chomp on oversized lollipops which are both décor and a snack in between the candied bacon and sliver dollar pancakes. Plentiful servings of mac and cheese, a trio of mini burgers, and the classic grilled cheese all prepare by executive chef Humberto Gullapa are also featured on the kid friendly menu. For a more calorie conscious selection guests can choose the Le Roy Salad with Avocado, chicken and balsamic vinegar or the Tunamato.

For a day time nibble, a sweet evening or a Sunday brunch with the family, Sweetiepie is a retreat from the mundane and an ideal haven for all ages. Mom’s can feel glamorous sipping on absinthe cocktails while kids can slurp on Shirley Temples. What a sweet temptation!

Droog Hits Soho

Amsterdam-based Droog is launching a New York store in Soho. The Dutch designs are known for their creative design and conceptual art, such as the rag chair from 3,200 euro- layered from the contents are recycled rags or even your own clothing to add to the design. The new store opens February 25 at 76 Greene Street.

Haute Restaurant of the Week: Double Crown

The newest addition to the Bowery quarter is a fine fare escapade, celebrating the nineteenth century British presence in countries of the Far East region. Double Crown is another brilliant creation from the AvroKo team who has gained their status designing restaurants such as Quality Meats, Sapa and Stanton Social. The décor and cuisine are inspired by the collision of cultures during Britain's colonization, inferred with a contemporary twist.

Guests are greeted to a visual feast as the Parisian brasserie atmosphere is intertwined with exposed brick walls, scavenger finds from Chelsea flea markets, such as vintage light fixtures and Singapore ceiling fans powered by a single belt. A divine and regal nook within Double Crown is the connecting bar, Madame Geneva, which allows for a libertine approach to eating and drinking, complete with laced panel walls and feminine touches.

Double Crown's impressive cocktail list does not disappoint, one could dabble all evening with Mango and Cardamom sour cocktails, Pimm's cup with gin or vodka and Asian melon rose Martinis all cultivated by Brian McGrory. However, you will sorely miss out if you do not taste the Streaky Ham. This delicacy takes ten days to cure with Lavender and honey before its cold smoked for an hour, roasted and left to marinate for an additional day. Another crown jewel is the Singapore Laska with green tea noodles, crab and bean sprouts served in a decorative china tea cup and saucer.

The executive chef behind the British-Indo-Asian conceptions is Brad Farmerie, who wanted to take a more casual yet imaginative approach to the menus he had created in the past. Among Farmerie's favorites is the braised Short Rib with a Guinness- five spice sauce and roasted parsnips. Finishing off the evening wouldn't be complete without giving into the enticing and luscious passion fruit Marshmallows. The boisterous and bustling scene is the place to people watch as a diverse downtown crowd gathers for a global infusion evening. Who ever thought that colonialism's stigma could be so appetizing?

Fashion Week finds a new Home

Mayor Bloomberg has been working with the CFDA and IMG Fashion for the last two years to come to an agreement on where the new home for Fashion Week will be, there was talk about moving it to the piers last year, however now it looks like its going to be the Lincoln Center starting in September 2010.

Since 1993, Fashion Week has been held in Bryant Park, however Bloomberg has been explaining that the tents have long outgrown the park and needs a more suitable and grand location. In September 2010, the shows will take place at Lincoln Center's Damrosch Park, located at the southwest corner of the Lincoln Center plaza, at 62nd Street between Columbus and Amsterdam Avenues.

This opulent new venue maybe more classier than the designers who actually show their collections.

Even Marc has to cut down during these frail Times

Late last Friday, Marc Jacobs announced that in addition to canceling his much-loved and hyped fashion show after party, he is also going to be cutting his show guest list by 60 percent. Instead of the usual 1,200 guests, there will be only 700; and oppose to the usual 900 standing in rafters, the standing only sections will be cut down to 200 which will largely be reserved for employees, making Marc Jacobs extravagance during fashion week even more more alluring.
“This isn’t the time to spend the money to entertain the entire world,” Robert Duffy, president of Marc Jacobs International, “Everybody thinks it costs the same money to entertain 500 people as opposed to 2,000. It doesn’t. All those 2,000 people still need to be seated, they still need to check in, this one needs this, that one needs that, and you know what? It’s very costly.”
Does this mean celebrity front row seating will be cut down too?

Secreted among a cluster of chic boutiques on Elizabeth Street in Nolita, lays a mysterious little jewel hidden inside the Australian roused restaurant, Public. The Monday Room is a cryptic little nook just behind the hostess station. Through the unmarked door lays an 18th century inspired gentlemen’s club. Designed by the acclaimed AvroKO team, the tufted leather booths and faded oriental carpet creates a sleek yet intimate den-like feeling where all things seductive take center stage.

The Monday Room is based on the impression that the first day of the work week is usually not a pleasurable one. In the hopes of making it better, this wine bar is the perfect recoil to bury your bad weekdays away with gorgeous fare prepared by Chef Brad Farmerie and paired wines selected by head sommelier Ruben Sanz Ramiro (who has worked at molecular gastronomic Heston Blumenthal’s The Fat Duck in England.) The only debatable question is that The Monday Room isn’t a wine bar because there is no bar; instead there is a private wine steward on hand to make sure your menu selections are on par with your wine selections. The wine steward makes recommendations from a list of 60 wines offered by half glass to full bottle; Ruben makes sure his wines have a story and a soul within each bottle, as his favorite regions to procure hard -to- find wines are from Australia and New Zealand.

Guests can choose custom wine flights allowing for comparison and contrast, however there is always room for flexibility. The revolving canapé menu consists of 10-14 small tastes. For starters choose the glazed eel served in an amuse-bouche spoon with pickled bean sprouts and soft boiled quail eggs that are paired with an exquisite Ombra Prosseco Brut from Minae Italy. Then venture into the Swordfish sashimi with Chinese black vinegar, pickled cucumber and crispy garlic with the suggested pairing of the Riesling Kabinett 2003. An absolute must is to taste the Manuka honey crème brulée with sherry poached figs and orange shortbread coupled with a perfected Domaine Cahuapé, 2005.

The small plates are reflective of global influences of South East Asia, the Middle East and North Africa. The experience of sharing and tasting courageous food and excellently textured wines such as the Lebanese Chateau Musar will please any seasoned oenophile. An artistic crowd of influencers and tastemakers lounge about on winged armchairs that frame smaller tables for intimate dining. The sultry yet cozy mood of The Monday Room is luscious in décor and rich in precision as each taste and sip truly fits its mystifying location.

This week Giorgio Armani has issued a "Trousergate" scandal in Milan, accusing D&G of copying the quilted men's pants that he showed as part of his collection in June.

The Guardian described it as "the most acidic row to hit the world of fashion for more than 15 years." After the D&G showed in Milan this past weekend, Armani noted that at least sixteen pairs of the quilted pants walked down the runway. "Now they copy me. Tomorrow they will learn," he told reporters. "I would understand if they were nobodies. But honestly!"Dolce and D&G are defending their designs arguing "We surely have plenty to learn, but certainly not from him," the partners, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana said in a statement. "The Armani style was never a source of inspiration for us and it is years since we have bothered to watch his collections." An Armani spokesman says the designer doesn't plan to take any legal action and called his comments "a casual observation."

A tiny yet salient staple to the Nolita neighborhood is Ruby's café, an Australian bistro that doubles as a girl about town hotspot, owned by Aussie natives Nick Mathers, who recently opened Kingswood and Lincoln Pilcher. Beneath the bare bone structure of the five communal picnic tables and exposed brick walls, lays a captivating crowd of DNA and Elite model darlings; along with flourishing downtown artists. The small space is conducive to the charm of this down under hideaway, with an expansive brunch-and-dinner menu featuring Aussie indulgences from the east- coast.

The menu dabbles in delightful salads such as the Pumpkin with baby spinach, pine nuts and caramelized balsamic dressing but the heart of Ruby's fare is the true-blue Australian burger which keeps the crowds at large and consistently waiting for a space at the multiparty table. Choose between The Bronte, The Bondi, The Bluey and The Whaley, for a very unique and even decadent take on a traditional burger, try the Aussie burger, complete with ground beef mixed with chopped peppers, then topped with a fried egg, beet slices, and roasted pineapple.

In the mornings when burgers are just not an option, enjoy the Sunday Style Section of the New York Times with a Flat White –none too foamy version of a latte, and a warm bowl of the succulent oatmeal topped with fruit for a conventional Aussie "brekky".

Of course, throughout the holidays there has also been the over indulgence of fluffy desserts, Cornish hens, spiced egg nog, latkas and everything in between. This is why we have come up with the ideal solution to cure your post December woes. How about a little trip to Barcelona? Or at least a boca grande restaurant that is inspired by the Spanish capital.

Surrounding the famous Boqueria market in Barcelona is a profusion of cafés, bars and small restaurants where buyers and sellers can indulge in their appetites and chat amongst friends. Owner of Suba, Yann De Roachefort and Chef Seamus Mullen brought this simple yet exceptional idea to New York, appropriately naming their venture, Boqueria. The fresh market food experience is all about unique bite size ingredients mixed with collective drinking and bliss. Peter Som Will not be showing this fashion week...among other Catastrophes

This New Year is certainly the bearer of bad news it seems, first Bill Blass closes its door then Obedient sons, now Peter Som will not be showing at Fashion Week. Earlier today news came that the designer has been forced to cancel his fall 2009 Fashion Week show after splitting with Creative Design Studios, a division of Lord & Taylor LLC. The companies teamed up less than a year and a half ago. WWD reports:

“We have realized that our strategic interests are no longer aligned and feel that this is the best direction for our company at this time,” Elana Posner, who co-owns Peter Som, Inc. with the namesake designer and serves as the company's chief executive officer and president, said.

…“Peter’s talent is enormous but the realities of today’s marketplace have forced us to reevaluate all of our strategic partnerships," said Susan Davidson, CEO of Creative Design Studios. "We need to focus all of our resources on our core businesses — Lord & Taylor and The Bay department stores.”

What next? “New York Look” won’t be publishing their biannual Fall 2009 Fashion week edition? Oh wait! they aren’t, due to a downtown in print ads… This recession is getting atrocious!

The latest financial story on Bloomberg.com is the notion that shoppers have actually started negotiating printed prices at brick and motor stores as well as independent owned boutiques.
While major stores such as Saks and Intermix are selling stock at 50% off or more, smaller stores that carry the same brands just cannot afford to slash prices, especially in a shopping season that is suppose to drive the economy. Shoppers are asking the small boutiques to match department store prices or passing them by entirely.
Boutique owners and sales associates are “really amazed” that shoppers have the audacity to haggle for lower prices, even wholesale prices. However, many are giving in to the requests of these hagglers just because they feel they have no choice.

does this mean shoppers could negotiate their way to a new pair of Louboutins or a vintage Chanel bag? One could only dream...or at least wait for the sample sales.

The new biannual style magazine has been titled "Love" and will be driven by Katie Grand, who was at the helm of Bauer Media's Pop magazine. Much of the staff of Pop are leaving their former ties and going over to Grand's new project. The magazine will focus on the progressive culture of fashion and art. The managing director of Condé Nast in the U.K. calls Love "edgy" and "high-end." Hopefully Love can defy all economic odds.

Named after a fictional Colombian village in Gabriel García Márquez's 1967 novel, "One Hundred Years of Solitude." Macondo is located in the Lower East Side, offering an elevated take on "comida de la calle" (Latin street food.) The Pan-Latin menu shares in dishes that span the South American continent, with fresh cocas from Barcelona, tantalizing empanadas from Colombia , churros from Spain, tacos from Mexico, and Arepas from Venezuela.

Macondo was created by Executive Chef Máximo Tejada and restaurateur Héctor Sanz (The team that also brought Rayuela) who strive to bring the best tapas from the Spanish Speaking worlds to New York City. The cocas (crisp flatbreads from Spain), Vegetariana with spinach and goat cheese and the tacos filled with lamb and Arugula are mini feasts for your taste buds, each bringing a unique blend of spice and bliss.

Mecondo also offers a first to New York City, this new offering is known as the "Escanciar Sidra", a traditional and dramatic way of pouring hard cider that originated in Spain, in which the liquid cascades four feet from a spout into the customer's glass to create a brief, Champagne-like effervescence.

The atmosphere is deliciously plush with ivy covered greenery encompassing the ceiling and walls making it the ultimate retreat to bring friends for a night of sangria served in fishbowls and Quemadas (a Galician witches' brew that comes out in full flame.) Mocondo's concrete floors serves as the sidewalk through the "green" restaurant, set up to replicate a tropical rainforest. This dining spot is a prelude for a night of fun with friends, as only boastful and audible crowds dwell to this gourmet "street food" eatery.

In a time where hardly anyone wants to spend money on luxury, many boutiques are bearing the grunt of the economy. Most wouldn't consider opening a new boutique at a time when everything is uncertain. However, for Showroom Seven/Seventh House PR owner Karen Erickson is all about taking the gamble.

The PR guru has had quite the success with her lucky number 7 businesses, and is now opening an innovative retail concept boutique, properly titled: Beyond 7.

The location is West Chelsea’s Terminal Warehouse building, complete industrial brick walls, and floor-to-ceiling windows. The boutique will offer truly fashion-forward designers from Elise Overland, Andy & Debb, Sunjoo Moon, and VPL. All the pieces will be curated as if it were an art gallery, suspending the pieces from the ceiling on lucite bars.

Other tidbits available includes: Erickson Beamon chandeliers, vintage guitars and furniture. Beyond 7 is even taking appointments for astrology and psychic readings and they are also plan on renting out the space to hold dance recitals .....I guess they have to do something to attract people in this bad time.

As frigid temperatures dip down to the teens, journeying into the freezing cold weather in search for a deliciously warm dinner can be a bit taxing and arduous if you do not know where to venture to. Fortunately we know of a charming place located in Tribeca that makes you feel all warm and cozy inside. Chef Marc Forgione and partner Chris Blumlo opened this comforting homelike restaurant called FORGE in june, featuring Forgione's cavalier approach to New American cuisine in a cozy fortress atmosphere. The name FORGE is Forgione's nickname among friends but also fits the warm setting and the level of skillfulness and expertise presented in both the dishes and layout of the restaurant's design.

In FORGE's 55-seat Dining Room, wooden shelves showcase antique nicknacks ranging from scales, egg beaters, horse shoes and copper pots to sustain the rustic feel. Behind the exposed concrete-topped bar is an elevator shaft, pulley still intact, which now is used as a stairway leading down to FORGE's 40-seat private dining area. No detail is left untouched, from the custom made butcher tables to the fresh out of the oven potato rolls with whipped caramelized onion butter that is brought to tables upon arrival.

An extensive wine list features worldly selections from California, New York, France, Italy and Germany. The list even includes a featured section that is dedicated to American classics, which includes Robert Mondavi's Reserve Cabernet as a homage to the late winemaker. As a connoisseur of Sangria we loved the Rose Sangria Semi-Sec Syrah, Grand Marnier Quince, Prosecco and Fresh Fruit.

To start we warmed our palates with the wild Kampachi Tartare with avocado, Sechuan mushroom buttons and American Caviar topped with Saratoga Chips. Then savored the grilled Portuguese Octopus with smoked "Hen Of the Woods" topped with a Beaujolaise Lemon Vinegar. We preferred the texture of the Wild Kampachi, however the sharp flavor of the octopus was impressive and unforgettable. To follow we were presented with an aromatic basil crusted halibut, marinated cherry tomatoes and Sorrento oil emulsion. The halibut just melted in the mouth and was the highlight of the dishes.

Trying Pastry chef Jennifer McCoy's ( of Emeril's Delmonico in New Orleans, Blackbird and Bittersweet Bakery in Chicago) desserts is the ideal way to finish your experience at FORGE. The signature Taste of American Classics is presented as a trio: Root Beer Float with ginger ice cream, Butterscotch Pudding with a pignoli cookie and Forgione's Granny Lu's Chocolate Cake with a cocoa nib tuille. Other sweets include the Bartlett Pear "In a Blanket" with almond-oatmeal Streusel and a side of Earl Grey Ice Cream, although you may be quite full from the starter and entree.

FORGE has an energetic feel that is felt as soon as you enter the restaurant, a perfect spot for gathering with friends for special occasions or just a night out. The mood is down to earth and laid-back so dress accordingly.

A couple week's ago we heard about Men's Vogue folding at Vogue, and now the same thing is happening with DNR,Women's Wear Daily's brother menswear publication. The final publication will be Nov. 24. After that WWD will take over all men's coverage of online and print. Come December, a WWD Men's channel will be added to WWD.com, and every Thursday starting in January, WWD will publish in-depth WWD Men's reports. It is ironic because DNR was around long before WWD formed, DNR debuted in 1982 and WWD was only a small feature within, before it spun off into the industry's fashion bible .

Last friday morning we were lucky enough to brush past Jean Paul Gaultier on Green street when in line for the PHI sample sale in Soho. We were not sure what type of business he was taking care of in New york , but today we find out from WWD and many other sources that Jean Paul Gaultier has just signed a license agreement for a line of children's clothes with Zannier Group. The first collection, for fall 2009, will include 120 items for boys and girls ages 2 to 14 and will launch in January. The number of designers designing children's wear is constantly growing as so many have extended their lines to dress the whole family.

CDFA/Vogue Fashion Fund awards Tonight

Tonight we will find out which one of the CDFA/Vogue Fashion Fund nominees will take home top honors. $200,000, business advice and loads of publicity. We will also find out who will score one of the two runners-up titles and the $50,000. The first award was given in 2004 to Proenza Schouler, Trovata (2005), Doo.Ri (2006), and Rogan (2007) have all taken the top prize while 3.1 Phillip Lim, Philip Crangi, Rodarte, Thakoon, Derek Lam, and Thom Browne have all been runners-up. All have become a Vogue darling and have gone on to make lots of money and recognition within the industry.

So who will win it tonight? Possibly it all comes down to Richard Chai, Jason Wu, Alexander Wang and Obedient sons and daughters. Refinery 29 via Fashionologie is predicting that Richard Chai as winner (considering every vogue editor including Ms. Wintour were packed into the tiny salon at the tents during fashion week.) They also predict that Vena Cava and Alexander Wang as runners-up, which is definitely foreseeable, but we see Alexander Wang and Richard Chai as the possible gold winners while Obedient Sons and daughters and Jason Wu take home sliver.

Concealed in a second-floor loft between Ludlow and Delancy on the Lower East Side lays Kuma Inn, a hidden gem of a restaurant that skillfully blends Thai and Filipino flavors with tapas. Simple yet suburb, Kuma's mellow atmosphere and laid back staff makes it easy to enjoy a night with friends or someone special.

The small dining room is quaint and rather romantic with candles lining the wall at every table. We were in heaven when we tried the seared ahi tuna, thai chili with miso vinaigrette, and the drunken spicy shrimp finished with sake. The kalamansi and thai chilies was one of our favorites too but the sticky rice and the daikon summer rolls alone will even have you coming back for more. For those who like to BYOB (bring your own bottle), there's $5 corking charge, however, they do have a nice sake list if you prefer to order. If venturing into the sake list is your prerogative rather than arriving armed with your own alcohol, may we suggest the Kome Dake a light rice wine which pairs perfectly with kuma's pan- asian flavors. With food this good and a BYOB policy, it's no wonder people like to keep this sexy little place a secret.

Kuma brings something different to the tried and true tapas concept which is why we love this romantic little hideaway. Though Kuma Inn is still a relative secret throughout the city, reservations are a must if you don't want to wait an hour to be seated. Once you try it, you'll understand why.

Last night UES (Upper Echelon shoes) showroom held a holiday 08 and Spring and Summer 09 collection preview to a crowded room of shoe enthusiasts and party goers who would join the design duo Nick Cohen and Seth Campbell at the after party held at Southside, which Nick Cohen would also dj at. (Cohen is a very talented DJ, not to mention a very good looking designer too.)

The juxtaposition between a high top sneaker and an 18 karat plated chain is why these shoes are so sought-after and well received. UES is positively a shoe designer to keep on your radar because their "shoewlery" (a term they coined) is too hard to resist.

Today Phi held a press preview for their warehouse and sample sale. Pieces included all seasons. Boots $75- all sizes were 8 and above, Belts $25 and some pretty incredible pieces all at 80% off. We snagged a gorgeous studded zip chain tank originally $895 and a hot pair of black platform booties too.. some were not so lucky as us, however if you love Phi than its worth your patience in line.

In its fourth year, The Cool vs. Cruel Competition educates the future generation of designers enrolled in schools fashion programs about the cruelty of the fur industry, and encourages these designers to explore fur-free, animal-friendly fashions as a viable alternative. Last night the Bowery hotel held a night of ceremonies and cocktails for the three finalists of this animal friendly competition, while the final fifteen contestants pieces were on display.

Celebrity judges and honorary committee members for this year's competition included: Kate Bosworth, Ann-Dexter Jones, Brittany Murphy, Betsey Johnson, Benjamin Cho, Charlotte Ronson, The Donnas, Loden Dager, Maggie Rizer, Maroon 5, Milla Jovovich, Mickey Boardman, Monet Mazur, Nicky Hilton, Nigel Barker, Rain Phoenix, Samantha Ronson, Steven Klein, Suede and Victoria Bartlett.

COUNTERFEIT SEIZURES UP: U.S. Customs and Border Protection said last week that it seized more than 400 shipments of counterfeit and pirated goods in the New York and Newark, N.J., seaport in the fiscal year ended Sept. 30. The merchandise had a domestic value of about $100 million, a 53 percent increase over the previous year. For the total New York area, Customs last year conducted more than 700 intellectual property rights seizures, of which counterfeit textiles, apparel and footwear accounted for 78 percent.- WWD

The Chanel designer shot his latest campaign at model Brad Koenig's house in Burlington, Vt., last week, and according to a production assistant, Karl had specific, calorific demands. "He requested seven loaves of Pennsylvania Wheat Bread and a tub of I Can't Believe It's Not Butter to be brought directly from New York to the set," the underling says. "My only job was bringing him the bread and the fake butter. Karl paid me $500 to do it, plus he paid off my $200 speeding ticket."

Sarah Jessica Parker has been asked to lend her voice to the first ever audio guide accompaniment at the Costume Institute exhibit at the Met. SJP has recorded a guide to Costume: The Art of Dress. The recordings will direct visitors around 20 exhibits ncluding historical costumes and relevant paintings and sculptures from the museum's permanent collection - from November 25.

"Looking beyond our encyclopedic collection of costume to the museum's other treasures puts clothing into a historical context," the Costume Institute's curator-in-charge, Harold Koda, tells WWD. "Walking through the galleries listening to Sarah Jessica Parker's narration will bring a sense of discovery and delight to the experience." Or are we listening to SJP's character Carrie Bradshaw's narration? Lets hope.

This past weekend in Tokyo hoards of people lined up for Comme des Garcons at H&M. The line debuts in New york on Thursday. One downer is that H&M just came out with a new policy stipulating that each customer can only purchase two of each CDG for H&M style, which dashes the hopes of people wanting to resell their goodies on ebay.

Our favorite pick is the velvet heart shaped dress at $350.

We anticipate records will be broken of the amount of time it will take Comme des Garcons to sell out.

Friday night Proenza Schouler debuted their incursion into the handbag world. Parsons Alum, Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez held a private party at Il Buco in the East Village, for guests such as Mary-Kate Olsen, Chloë Sevigny, Vanessa Traina, Amy Greenspon and Julia Restoin Roitfeld.

McCollough was feeling the spirit of President- Elect Obama, calling their new bag line “democratic. You can be a size two or size 26.” reported by WWD.

As, a fly on the wall we saw bickering between guest members, many tequila shots taken down, cigarette breaks every five minutes and multiple trips to the bathroom in pairs. Just another New York party.

Part of the enjoyment of being a patron at sushi restaurant Soto is to witness the madness of sushi chef Sotohiro Kosugi. At any given time he will become enraged and throw a $50-a-pound bluefin tuna into the trash due to a small imperfection on the skin. Kosugi's dedication to perfection isn't just for show, Food & Wine named him one of America's top new chefs back in 1997, a title he takes very seriously.

An ambiguous, unmarked sushi house located in Greenwich Village, Soto seats an intimate dining room of 42 people. The setting is clean and contemporary with a touch a Tokyo influence. An open kitchen and sushi bar allows hungry eyes to feast on dishes as they are being prepared. To ensure the fish is fresh enough for chef Kosugi, routine deliveries of tuna from Ecuador, fresh Amber Jack from Hawaii and pearly white Toyama shrimp from Japan show up habitually, each and everyday.

One would think only steak could be prepared rare, medium rare or well done, at Soto, your sushi can be as well. The choices for savoring your fish are "pre or post" (pre means cleaner taste and chewier texture, post means it's softer and more flavorful.) When tasting the fatty "chu-toro" tuna we wondered how sushi could look so simple yet taste so good. Other notables on the menu are the Steamed Lobster With Uni Mousse, the delicate Daylight Flounder Karaag, and the Deep Fried Soft Shell Crab, which we recommend for people who prefer their fish cooked. Soto also serves an impressive list of hard to find sakes, which can be ordered either by the bottle or in chilled beakers. We recommend trying the Sojou, it’s fully worth the taste test.

As Japanese restaurants run rampant in New York the typical pretentious price should be expected, however, Soto’s prices remain humble, making it the perfect sushi spot for a date or dinner theater all-in-one. That is if Chef Kosugi doesn’t find any discrepancies with his fish.

We have a little confession to make. We are obsessed with Hampton Chutney co. A little take-out/sit down place we often walk by multiply times a day in Soho, however never wandered in until this week. Hampton Chutney sets the stage for good karma at a inexpensive price. The addictive South-Indian dosas and Uttapa's are made from rice and lentil flour, thinned out to into a very wide and long crepe, then stuffed and folded with avocados, cilantro, traditional Indian spices and anything chutney. There is a large variety of these golden crisp wraps and most are under $9.00. You then have the choice of dousing your dosa into sides of pumpkin, piquant chutney and cilantro dips. We haven't ventured far out of the realm of the Uttapa's, there is much more to taste but an addiction like this is hard to kick.

Every year China hosts an exhibition at the Shanghai Contemporary Art Fair, many fashion forward, pushing the envelope artists come together to show off their creations. Wim Delvoye, a 43-year-old Belgian conceptual artist, tattooed eight pigs with the LV trademark symbol as part of an exhibit called "Art Farm". Delvoye had tattooed the designs on the animals when they were piglets and tracked the "canvases" as they grew. After string of complaints the exhibit was removed from the show. They were already displayed at a Beijing art show, which triggered controversy but was not removed.

Delvoye bred his pigs on a farm outside Beijing, letting his tattoos grow with the animals. They were then killed and stuffed and cost about £106,000. He says his pigs are treated humanely and they are given sedatives before being tattooed. Collectors can buy them live or purchase their tattooed skins when they die of old age...or if they are murdered and then stuffed. However, Delvoye stands by his artistic integrity and says the pig have plenty of food and enjoy better living conditions than millions of poor Chinese.

Nine Rules to a successful "Trollsen Twin" book Signing

Yesterday Barnes and Noble held the much anticipated MK and Ashley Olsen book signing for their first grown up book titled, Influence. The book is surprisingly well written and well put together however their book signing was not. Here is a list of rules each Olsen participant had to follow. We have a feeling that the Peta people (photographed on the side) didn't participate in the hoopla inside.

1) Mary-Kate Olsen and Ashley Olsen will be with us for a limited time. They will only be signing copies of their book, Influence. They will not be speaking, reading or taking questions.

2) Mary-Kate Olsen and Ashley Olsen will NOT sign any memorabilia or product other than Influence. There is a limit of one book per person, and your one book must be purchased here.

3) You will be directed to pay for your book upon entering the store and will be given a receipt for your purchase. Please keep your receipt. You will receive your book at the signing table.

4) Along with your receipt, you will be given a B&N wristband, and then directed to the event space on the 4th floor. You must have a receipt and a wristband to access the 4th floor.

5) Anyone approaching the signing table must have paid for the book and be wearing a B&N wristband. One person, one wristband, one book.

6) You will collect your signed book at the signing table. If you have paid for any additional copies, a staff member will provide you with those before you exit the space.

7) There is no photography allowed. You must put away your camera or cell phone before approaching the signing table. The authors will not pose for photos.

8) If you leave, or the authors leave, before you are able to collect a signed book, you may present your receipt to a cashier for either an unsigned book or a refund. (Refunds only issued within 14 days of receipt.)

9) There will be no extra signed copies available after the authors leave the store. They will not be able to sign for anyone who is not on line. No pre-orders.
